I know, I am like a 65 year old man caught in a 29 year old girl’s body. I was searching for this one clip that I saw years and years ago, but I couldn’t find it, so I thought I would just describe the story here.

It was an award show of some sort and Walter Mathau was being honored. So naturally, they had Jack Lemmon come up to say a few words and present the award. Jack Lemmon told a story about how Walter Mathau got really hurt when they were working on a movie called Cookie’s Fortune. Somehow Walter Mathau fell through a trap door and landed on his back on hard concrete. It was pretty serious, and as Walter was lying there waiting for the ambulance, Jack asked him, “Does it hurt real bad? Do you need anything Walter? Are you comfortable?”

And Walter Mathau looked up at him with a pained expression and said, “I make a living.”

Classic Line.

lfarm:

“This gentleman couldn’t figure out why food was going missing in his high-storey NYC apartment. His girlfriend denied taking it. So he set up a hidden camera to see what was happening, and shortly thereafter, he saw a strange woman creep out of a deep storage crawlspace over the kitchen, let herself down onto the kitchen table and help herself to his pantry. He phoned the police (he was in the apartment), and they told him after investigating that they believed the woman had been secretly living in his apartment for weeks.”

Colton Harris-Moore, the barefoot boy bandit, outfoxes sheriffs

In the forests and remote islands around Seattle, police are setting traps for a barefoot teenage outlaw who has eluded them for nearly two years.

Police say 18-year-old Colton Harris-Moore, whose escapades are turning him into a folk legend, is a one-man crime wave, responsible for 50 burglaries as well as stealing light aircraft, which he taught himself to fly from video games, and several speedboats.

He lives in the woods, shuns shoes and catches his own food. His only technological aid is a pair of thermal-imaging goggles to hunt at night and his weakness is pizzas, which he asks to be delivered at the edge of the woods.

For some Harris-Moore is a modern Butch Cassidy: a surprisingly agile 6ft 5in cat burglar who thanks his victims by leaving them notes and cheeky photographs of himself, which have sold for £300 on eBay.

Thousands subscribe to his Facebook page and his image appears on T-shirts with the logo “Fly, Colton, Fly!”. Local rock groups have penned songs about him.

Hollywood producers have lodged lucrative film deals with his family and offered to pay for lawyers if he gives himself up.

Raised in a caravan on Camano Island, an isolated community in the Puget Sound, Harris-Moore started living wild at the age of seven. He would break into holiday homes, steal blankets and food and vanish into the woods for days.

In April 2008, after being sent to a juvenile detention centre, he complained that the beds were too short for his lanky frame and went on the run.

Police believe he fled to Canada and then, a few weeks ago, came back across the border to Idaho where he stole a Cessna 182 and flew to Seattle. He crash-landed in a forest clearing and walked away with cuts and bruises.

Since then he has been accused of stealing other planes for hops around the islands in the Puget Sound, including another Cessna belonging to a disc jockey who vented his frustration on radio, saying: “He still doesn’t know how to land a plane in one piece.”

He evaded a police pursuit by crashing a Mercedes-Benz into a roadside gas storage tank, using the explosion as a diversion to escape back into the woods where, he says, he feels like a Native American.

This was followed by the largest manhunt in recent memory. Three dozen sheriffs, aided by specialist armed units and an FBI helicopter, fanned out across Camano Island but failed to capture him. “We saw him, we think, but it’s like he disappeared in front of our eyes,” said one sheriff.

His luck may be about to run out. During a recent sweep a rifle shot was fired at police, raising his status to “armed and dangerous”. His mother, Pamela Kohler, now fears that even if he did not fire the shot he will be held responsible.

Kohler said she was proud her son had stolen the aircraft because he had never had a flying lesson in his life. “I was going to send him to flight school, but I guess I don’t have to,” she said. “I’d tell him the next time he took a plane: wear a parachute and practise your landing.

“If he shot that gun, it was really stupid. I don’t expect him to come out of the woods alive.”

[via]

Its actually one of my favorites because it only carries cookbooks. For some reason I really like places that focus on one thing you know? And they have vintage cookbooks as well, so how could I not love it.

On Sunday they had a signing with a guy named Thomas Keller, you know he did a little thing called the French Laundry? He came out with his latest book on his resturant Ad Hoc and was signing copies. So without really thinking I orderd 4 books, one for my friends, one for my mom, one for my aunt and one for my grandma. Basically I plan on winning Christmas.

Since I ordered the books the day before, I arrived about 45 minutes before the signing was supposed to start, right when the shop owner announced to the very full store that they had sold out of books. A sigh of disapointment rose, just as I stepped up to the front to retrieve my FOUR books. The looks I got from the unlucky few were withering let me tell you.

Before going any further, I realize that this post is just screaming for a “STUFF WHITE PEOPLE LIKE” sticker to be slapped all over this. I mean, a cookbook store in Noe Valley, San Francisco, Thomas Keller, a cook book signing and I drove to it in my Prius and obsessively updated my twitter status on my iPhone? I know, I am like their poster child.

Anyways, Thomas finally shows up and speaks to the crowd for about 20 minutes. In those 20 minutes he is able to impart that he never had any home cooking growing up since he was raised in a single parent household with three older brothers and basically he had to fight for nourishment AND that the inspiration for this book came when his father, who lived next door to him after having a terrible accident, asked him to make him a meal of BBQ chicken, mashed potatoes and strawberry shortcake. They had a lovely meal on the deck and the next day his dad DIED. Then he sat down to sign some books.

So as I am listening to his stories and holding these four heavy books, I start to get really nervous. Not only is this guy one of the world’s most well known chefs, but the store was packed, and I noticed everyone else only had 2 books MAX and I knew the guy was not going to be thrilled when I rolled up with my load and dropped it on him. So I decided I would only ask for one inscription, thinking it would make me a little less obnoxious.

When I got to the front I was in full freak out mode. Completely blushing, even though it was literally hailing outside, and I couldn’t shut up. After finishing the first book, he opened the second one and said, “Who should I make this out to?”

“Oh don’t worry about it, I have so many books, I am so sorry,” I said which also represented the 31st time I had apologized for having so many books since arriving in front of his desk.

After assuring me it was no problem, he asked me again for the name and I said Candy which is my mom’s name. Actually what I said was, “Could you make it out to Candy? That’s my mom’s name, which I know sounds like a prostitutes name.”

He looked at me funny, unsurprisingly, and said “Well, she sounds sweet.”

Yeah, I don’t think I will be sharing that part of the story with my mom when she is opening her present Christmas morning.

(via graphiceverywhere)

(via graphiceverywhere)

molls:

Today Edward and I went to our friend Jason’s holiday brunch. Instead of bringing a bottle of champers or some banana bread or perhaps a bouquet of flowers, he asked that we bring a bag of our old clothes. All of the donations are going to the LA Gay and Lesbian Center, specifically to the Jeff Griffith Youth Center.

Really excited about the prospect of a transgendered teen walking around LA in my Gap button downs.

The company was good and the food was delicious. I didn’t drink anything because I am on a serious deadline (read: past deadline) for a story that I need to finish tonight. Also, I woke up drunk and I have this thing where I only really can be drunk once a day or I start to feel like a shithead/Nancy Spungen.

Jason has great taste and his apartment was decorated beautifully. The best part was the newest addition to the living room, this silkscreen of Beyonce from the “Put a Ring On It” video. Jason was all, “I can’t believe that the first real art purchase I ever made in my life is Beyonce-related.” And I was like, “Well, how does this piece make you feel? It makes me feel really good.”

That’s what art’s about, you guys.

I always loved Norman Rockwell’s artwork. Say an exhibit of his in Balboa Park years ago with Kelley, it was lovely.

kateoplis:

Forget all this talk about the death of print media...

kateoplis:

Forget all this talk about the death of print media for a moment. Tomorrow a newspaper is born in San Francisco. Issue 33 of McSweeney’s Quarterly will be a one-time-only, old-fashioned broadsheet — the San Francisco Panorama. Its pages will measure 22 by 15 inches. Here’s what this beautiful beast will cover: “It’ll have news (actual news, tied to the day it comes out) and sports and arts coverage, and comics (sixteen pages of glorious, full-color comics, from Chris Ware and Dan Clowes and Art Spiegelman and many others besides) and a magazine and a weekend guide, and will basically be an attempt to demonstrate all the great things print journalism can (still) do, with as much first-rate writing and reportage and design (and posters and games and on-location Antarctic travelogues) as we can get in there. Expect journalism from Andrew Sean Greer, fiction from George Saunders and Roddy Doyle, dispatches from Afghanistan, and much, much more.”
